you and me

we were watching everwood. watching 16-year-old ephram pledge his undying love to 20-year-old madison. (or something like that.)

turtle said, "this is so dumb. he doesn't know what love is. he's 16."

i said, "you were 17." meaning that he was 17 when he went out with her, but i didn't have to explain; he knew what i meant.

"i know. and i was stupid too."

later we were in the kitchen washing up the dishes. the same conversation had somehow carried over.

he said, "love is stupid. the word is overused. dating at that age is stupid too."

and i said, "no, being 'in love' is stupid and overused. there's a big difference between being 'in love' and loving someone. loving someone is different."

"well i love a lot of people but that doesn't mean i have to go around dating them."

"but even romantic love can be true love and be different than being 'in love.' otherwise no one would stay married." i was thinking of our parents.

"yeah but most people don't know that difference at the age of 16."

"of course not. but other people don't know that difference at the age of 40."

"true."

and i said, "you're bitter."

he said, "i know. girls are malicious."

"i'm not malicious."

"no you aren't. other girls are though...plus i've never dated you."

and then he said, "hey here's a song about girls being malicious," and turned some music on and we finished washing the dishes.
